Cleanliness is a major concern for Ken, who disposes needles after a one-time use and makes sure his equipment is kept sterile.  Not all tattoo artists are that careful

Since any puncture or wound to the skin has the potential for infection, precise attention is paid to sterilization.

The only acceptable method of sterilization for killing every living microorganism is an autoclave, a heat/steam/pressure unit (used in hospitals) that achieves and maintains 250 degrees Fahrenheit (121 C) under 10 pounds of pressure for 30 minutes or up to 270 F (132 C) under 15 pounds of pressure for 15 minutes.  See a picture of ours to the left.

All reusable materials, such as the needle bar and the tube, are completely cleaned by putting them into special pouches and sterilized in the autoclave.

Although body art is riding a wave of popularity in the United States, in some cultures in the Far East, people who have tattoos are still regarded as second-class citizens. In Japan it was once thought only gangsters, the yakuza, got tattoos.

But the cultural barriers are falling.

It used to be in Japan that if someone had tattoos they were bad people.  But it’s like dying your hair or body piercing; it’s accepted by the younger generation.

“We’re more focused on quality than some of the other studios,” Ken says.  “We offer a sterile, personal service to our customers.  We’re not into knocking out as many tattoos as we can.”

He’s also not interested in inking anyone who comes to his shop on a whim.  That’s why the locate is on a side street, off the beaten path.  Ken  won’t tattoo genitalia, faces or tattoos that are racist or satanic.

102 Tattoo is all about quality work and high standards.  Ken and Joe invite you to stop by and select your work of art today.
